💡 How Pity Works

5-minute read · based on officially published banner rates

1. Hard pity: the guarantee

Every limited banner has a hard pity: pull 90 times on a character banner (80 on weapon) without a 5-star, and the 90th pull is guaranteed to be 5-star. This number comes straight from the official published rates — it's the only pity value HoYoverse states outright.

2. Soft pity: where luck quietly improves

Long before hard pity, your odds start climbing. Community tracking of millions of pulls shows the 5-star rate begins rising around pull 74 (character) or 63 (weapon) — this is soft pity. It's not officially published, but the data is overwhelming: most 5-stars land between pulls 75–80, not at 90.

Rule of thumb: if you're at 70+ pulls, you're in the hot zone. Every pull from here is far more valuable than one at pity 0.

3. The 50/50: winning and losing

When a 5-star drops on a limited character banner, there's a 50% chance it's the featured character — and 50% it's a standard-pool character. Lose the 50/50 and your next 5-star is guaranteed to be the featured one. That's the "guaranteed" (大保底) state our planner asks about.

4. What this means for your primogems

One pull costs 160 primogems. A full hard-pity run is 90 × 160 = 14,400 primogems. But because of soft pity, the expected cost is much lower — around 60–65 pulls on average. Our pity planner does this math for your exact situation: current pity, guaranteed or not, primogems on hand.

5. Pity is shared — and resets

Pity carries over between banners of the same type: if you stop at 70 pulls on one character banner, the next character banner starts at 70. But the moment any 5-star drops, pity resets to zero — even if it wasn't the character you wanted.

FAQ

Does pity carry over to the next banner?

Yes — within the same banner type. Character-banner pity carries to the next character banner. It resets only when a 5-star drops.

Is soft pity official?

No. Hard pity (90/80) and base rates are officially published; soft-pity thresholds (~74/63) come from community tracking of millions of pulls.

Should I pull at 70 pity if I don't want the featured character?

Careful — you're in the soft-pity hot zone, so an accidental 5-star is likely and would reset your pity. Most planners suggest stopping.
